… but I just have to share this spam because it was so much fun to read out loud to Dan just now:

Hi Dear man,
Please don’t be wondered. This letter isn’t spam and doesn’t involve any commercial info. This is a one-time massage, which you are going to get from this e-mail.
The request on searching for a love couple that you have left on the dating website, have finally been reviewed. Today we would like to bring magnificent news – you got the chance to improve your life path. We provide you with a great opportunity to build serious relations. According to your searching wants we’ve chosen for you an ideal couple.
We would like to give you preliminary information about this lady:
Her name is Natalja, she is 35 years old and she is from Russian Federation. The lass isn’t married and has no children. She doesn’t smoke and don’t imbibe.
She is a young, calm, goal seeking and active lass, which lacks warmth and endearment in this great world. Her cheerfulness has no limits – her sports activity is a good justification to that. Going out for a walk, love towards nature and plants makes our applicant a romantic one. Maybe in future you could see the daybreak jointly, walking by the river, holding each other’s hands. Your good fortune is in your hands now!
And this is only one part of all the positive criteria, which we were portraying to you about this handsome lass.
At the moment our mission is finished.

If you would like to go on with your communication with this fascinating girl, then you can send her a letter on her private e-mail address – [address deleted]

We wish you happiness! Bring love and be beloved!

I just ran across a very bizarre YouTube video. It has oboe in the piece, so that’s why I was alerted to it. It is supposed to be someone’s original composition, but whoever wrote it clearly knows the Marcello oboe concerto and it’s really a sort of reworking of the slow movement.

So you wonder why I can’t put it up here so you can all puzzle over it with me? You DO wonder … right?

It’s apparently in memory of dogs being hit by cars because the video is of dogs being killed on freeways. Really.

I don’t even know what to say about this other than this: bizarre.

I’m not going to be able to keep these up, I fear — it’s difficult to find anything I’m willing to post here! If any readers find anything please do let me know. Oboe, d’amore, or English horn — all qualify for this “Oboe Outside My Little World” spot). So do oboe-like instruments … shawm, suona … you name it, I’ll put it here if the video is decent enough.

Kate St. John plays oboe and English horn. And she sings. She was in the band “Dream Academy” … I posted a video of them back in July.

I need someone to personally take care of my oboe reed.

We’ll see that at the first show. I don’t know about other countries, but in Moscow, no one has ever done anything of this kind. 3D technology is known to everyone thanks to cinemas, but we decided to apply it to [highbrow] art.”

Read on one of ‘em:

Studying to perform double bass on the internet is arguably the most effective oboe instructing approach ever

the oboe teaches you to be able to breathe in and out at the same time!!!!!!

The soul and emotion of [classical music] is so powerful that to like it is so easy – it’s just people think you need to be educated. I thought that myself for a long time, until I had listened to so many kinds of music, that one day I just tried it. But it’s not about learning…It’s about learning that it’s just there.

-Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (of Daft Punk)

I read it here.

Remember when I wrote about the conductor who walked out right before a concert? She’s now been fired. But of course she said she wasn’t coming back if one player wasn’t gone, so I suppose she really quit since he wasn’t removed.

Ugly stuff.

(I went to the orchestra site. It’s rather strange. I couldn’t even find an orchestra roster.)

I think this would be a fantastic gift for many! Christmas is not that far away. :-)

Countertenor Andreas Scholl Returns to Decca with All-New Recording of Purcell

O Solitude is Andreas Scholl’s First-Ever Recording of the Music of Purcell, Available November 23, 2010

“There are more excellent countertenors before the public today than ever before, but one of them stands out above all others… Andreas Scholl” – Fanfare

You can catch bits of the CD here.

I received an advance copy of the CD*. I have to tell you this is one mighty wonderful disk. Scholl is just incredible. What a beautiful, pure sound he has. So incredibly musical. I was pretty darn mesmerized. And the orchestra sounds wonderful as well. Really.

I’d love to pick a favorite number, but I think that would be ridiculous. Like picking a favorite child, you know? So I guess I won’t go there.

My birthday is in November. I’m going to call this CD my birthday present. It is music to feed me for a very long time. :-)

What Power art thou
(the cold song)

What power art thou, who from below
Hast made me rise unwillingly and slow
From beds of everlasting snow
See’st thou not (how stiff) and wondrous old
Far unfit to bear the bitter cold,
I (can scarcely move or draw my breath)
Let me, let me freeze again to death.

I suspect this is the album version:

I think I favor this one:

JS Bach: Komm Jesu Komm, BWV 229
Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge

Come, Jesus, come, my flesh is weary,
My strength deserts me more and more,
I yearn for Thy peace;
Life’s bitter journey is too hard for me.
Come, I will give myself to Thee,
Thou art the sure Way,
The Truth and the Life.

Thus I yield myself into Thy hands,
And bid the world good night.
Soon as my life may end,
My soul is prepared.
It shall rise up with its Creator,
For Jesus is, and remains,
The true way to Life.

Softly and Tenderly
Button Accordion
