Purcell: Funeral Sentences (only one part)
Clare College Cambridge

Man that is born of a woman hath but a short time to live, and is full of misery. He cometh up, and is cut down, like a flower; he fleeth as it were a shadow, and never continueth in one stay.

Before the Throne of God

(I wish there wasn’t any talking in this, but I like the arrangement so I’m featuring it anyway. If I can find a string quartet without the background chatter I’ll put it up next time.)

Cygnet String Quartet plays “Before the Throne of God Above” arranged by Eden String Quartet.

1st Violin — Stevan Lukich
2nd Violin — Sarah Dremann
Cello — Tyler Stembridge
Viola — Darby Fitch

PRESENTED BY HUDSON VALLEY SINGERS IN A JOINT VENTURE
WITH HÉT CONCERTKOOR FROM THE NETHERLANDS AND THE
NEW YORK METAMORPHOSES ORCHESTRA, CONDUCTED BY
EUGENE SIROTKINE

NEW YORK, NY- The Hudson Valley Singers of Westchester were determined to perform the beautiful and universally recognized masterpiece, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, next Saturday night along with a visiting chorus from the Netherlands, Hét Concertkoor. They never realized realized that “the roof would literally cave in on them.” That is exactly what happened earlier this week when they found out that the venue for the performance, The Church of St. Paul The Apostle near Lincoln Center, was being temporarily closed due to a fatal accident. A father-to-be construction worker, Janusz Zdybel, plunged 12 stories to his death while installing a safety net under the ceiling of the Church.

The Hudson Valley Singers were horrified and immediately took up a collection for the widow during their rehearsals. Anyone interested in contributing is urged to call Lois Whitman’s contact above. The Hudson Valley Singers formed two committees, one to handle the collection and the other to find a new venue. Both were successful even though the Hudson Valley Singers along with the Netherland chorus, Hét Concertkoor, will be “singing their hearts out” for Janusz Zdybel. The new venue is the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 152 West 71st Street, between Broadway and Columbus. The performance will start at 8:30PM.

The Hudson Valley Singers, hailed by The New York Times as one of Westchester’s “most ambitious choruses” celebrate their 60th anniversary this year. Recent performances include major oratorios of Handel, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Orff, and Honegger.

… or maybe not …?

When Manchester’s Hallé Concerts Society proudly described itself as Britain’s longest-established professional symphony orchestra the words struck a discordant note with rivals across the M6.

For while the Hallé can claim a 153-year unbroken performance record since Sir Charles Hallé first assembled his talented musicians in 1858, it seems the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society may lay better claim to the title – by 18 years.

At least one supporter formally complained about the statement, displayed on the Hallé’s website, and now after a seven-month inquiry involving old programmes, wage ledgers, and other historical documents, the Advertising Standards Authority has ruled that the Hallé advertisement was misleading and must be withdrawn. It reproved the society for not making more stringent checks before making “competitive claims”.

… I haven’t a clue if this is an arrangement. I’m guessing so …? Any of you hear of Grigoras Dinicu before?

Grigoras Dinicu: Spring Hora
Gilles Apap, Kira Kraftzoff and Rastrelli Cello Quartet

Beethoven Violin Concerto, last movement. Sort of. The video is just a snippet from the movie “La Belle Verte”. This particular YouTube video is overdubbed in Russian. The actual movie is in French.

If you want to see even more (and hear it in French with English subtitles) there’s this:

I’m interested in music, but not the music theory, but you don’t have to think to play arpeggios. You want to play a violin, you have only one solution, to play in the conservatory you need to have a power. Power, Power. Power!

A short bit of the synopsis: As part of an intergalactic coalition, a well-meaning space alien volunteers to bring a message of self-actualization and harmony with nature to the one planet rejected by all her peers as incorrigible — Earth.

Full synopsis

For some reason I had a very silly mental block against one of the solos in Petrouchka (Petrushka? You choose!) yesterday. This is going to sound very silly, but it has to do with the way it was notated. It may be crazy, but there you go.

Here’s the excerpt:

For some reason I simply couldn’t manage to play the first four notes evenly. I wanted more weight, due to the accent and the way it looks(!) on the third note, which was causing me to stretch it out. Go figure. IF it had been written as four sixteenth notes, with the fourth one tied to an eighth, I think I actually would have been fine. Maybe.

But now I’ve figured it out, I think.

How?

Well, sometimes I add lyrics to things. And this time I had the perfect ones:

“Patty’s stupid! She cannot count!”

Yep. That works.
