(I’m going to do a series of different composers’ take on “O Magnum Mysterium” for the next few days.)

Ivo Antognini: O Magnum Mysterium
Vancouver Chamber Choir

O great mystery,
and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the new-born Lord,
lying in a manger!
Blessed is the Virgin whose womb
was worthy to bear
Christ the Lord.
Alleluia!

Herbert Howells: A Spotless Rose
King’s College Cambridge

A Spotless Rose is blowing,
Sprung from a tender root,
Of ancient seers’ foreshowing,
Of Jesse promised fruit;
Its fairest bud unfolds to light
Amid the cold, cold winter,
And in the dark midnight.

The Rose which I am singing,
Whereof Isaiah said,
Is from its sweet root springing
In Mary, purest Maid;
For through God’s great love and might
The Blessed Babe she bare us
In a cold, cold winter’s night.

People Look East
Canto Deo

People, look east, the time is near
For the crowning of the year
Make your house fair as you are able,
Trim the hearth and set the table.
People, look east, and sing today,
Love. the Guest, is on the way.

Once again I’m following the liturgical calendar for this, so Advent begins today rather than December 1.

It’s quite possible you won’t see much on the blog this month, as I pull back a bit due to work and other events. But who knows? I write things like that, and then I get a spurt of energy and manage to put things up after all.

But here we go … I will try to post something every day until December 25.
