Opera Idol from Stark Insider on Vimeo.

Opera is the greatest art form created by the human mind,” Lotfi Mansouri, a judge and former general director of the San Francisco Opera tells Loni Kao Stark. “And you know why? Because it’s a composite art form. Everything is in it. It’s not just the music, it’s the stage, it’s the sets, the costumes. Dance. Lighting. Anything you want, it’s in opera.”

May 21, 7pm
California Theatre, 345 South First Street, San Jose
Tickets; $100 ($50 tax deductible) for premium seating; $50 ($25 tax-deductible) for reserved orchestra seating.

I’ll be there tomorrow night at 7:00 to hear the 10 finalists. SO cool, too, to see the number of OSJ current and former artists in residence are in the finals!!! Jouvanca Jean-Baptiste, Rebecca Davis, Christopher Bengochea, Jasmina Halimic & Krassen Karagiozov … congratulations!

And yeah, Jouvanca, I drive a Prius! Does that make ME a Prius? Hmmm. Maybe so. ;-)

It’s not just about music, by the way … we’re talking theater, ballet and more!

Please vote!

We don’t have nearly enough votes to pull us through at this point. Spread the word. Tell your family, friends, colleagues … heck, tell the grocery store clerk and the person who makes your lattés!

And thank you, thank you, thank you to those of you who have voted. It is greatly appreciated!

While Symphony Silicon Valley was voted in the top 100 for Chase Community Giving (Thank you voters! Thank you Chase!), we now enter into a tighter race, competing for the $500,000 grant for our arts education program.. Because of that I’m going to remind you daily until the voting stops. PLEASE, if you are on Facebook, vote for us. This is a worthy and worthwhile cause … taking the arts to all 4th through 6th grade students in our county! That’s the goal. I — and all involved with Symphony Silicon Valley — appreciate your votes! Let’s get the larger sum of money for this project!

Wait, what are you doing reading this blog still? You really need to CLICK HERE TO VOTE!

Please bear with me: I will post this particular news every day until the voting period ends.

What a combination of names for the Classic Brit awards:

Three virtuoso violinists were feted at this year’s Classic Brit Awards, held at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Britain’s Tasmin Little received the Critics’ Award for her acclaimed album Elgar: Violin Concerto, while Norway’s Vilde Frang took home a newcomer prize.

Dutch violinist Andre Rieu, meanwhile, won the coveted album of the year award for Moonlight Serenade, recorded with the Johann Strauss Orchestra.

Elsewhere the British conductor Antonio Pappano was named best male artist.

Pappano, music director of the Royal Opera House, had also been shortlisted for the Critics’ Award, which he received at last year’s ceremony.

Estonia’s Arvo Part was named composer of the year at Thursday’s event, hosted by Myleene Klass, while Il Divo were crowned artists of the decade.

Operatic quartet Il Divo were crowned artists of the decade at Thursday’s ceremony
Mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins, German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and trumpeter Alison Balsom – recipient of the best female artist prize – were among the performers.

Late composer John Barry, best known for his contributions to the James Bond films, was honoured posthumously with an outstanding contribution to music award.

The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra has selected the Oregon Symphony’s resident conductor, Gregory Vajda, as its music director and conductor. The HSO is located in Huntsville, Alabama, and is the oldest, continuously operating professional orchestra in the state, having started in 1955. According to the orchestra’s web site, Vajda’s selection was a unanimous decision.

I sure hope he’s still coming to San Jose! (I continue to dream … I’d love to see him with Opera San José one of these years!)

I just received this notice:

JAMES LEVINE TO CANCEL ALL HIS APPEARANCES FOR THE 2011 TANGLEWOOD SEASON

James Levine has announced today that he will be withdrawing from all of his 2011 Tanglewood appearances on the advice of his doctors. This announcement is being made in conjunction with other cancellations announced by the Metropolitan Opera.
In early June, the Boston Symphony Orchestra will announce a new roster of conductors for the 2011 Tanglewood programs which were to be led by James Levine. The previously scheduled performance of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande with the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra and cast of professional singers, which was to have taken place on July 25, will be replaced by a Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra program. Replacement conductors will be selected for the following programs:

I just received an email from a major symphony orchestra that includes this in its subject header EMBARGOED: [insert symphony orchestra's initials] 2011-12 Season Announcement. At the start of the message it says in bright red letters EMBARGOED FOR PUBLICATION UNTIL FRIDAY, MAY 6, 2011

What I want to know is 1) why send it out today, then? and 2) are they going to hunt me down and break all my oboe reeds if I post it all today?

But yeah, I’ll follow rules. I’m a good girl, I am!

Philip Glass has founded (is founding?) a new music festival and it’s at Carmel’s Hidden Valley.

I really think he should have an oboe blogger there. Don’t you? (Of course I probably just shot myself in the foot by blogging this as I have! Oh well. Everyone needs to have a sense of humor, don’t you think?)

The board of the 111-year-old Philadelphia Orchestra Saturday voted in favor of Chapter 11, sources say. Papers will be filed within hours or days in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania, asking for reorganization, according to orchestra leaders.

The move makes the Philadelphia Orchestra the first major U.S. ensemble known to file for bankruptcy, according to orchestra industry groups and veteran observers.

Just read this:

SAN JOSE, CA—General Director Irene Dalis announced today that Opera San José will present a free performance of Puccini’s La bohème for targeted members of the San José community who have never or not recently attended an opera thanks to a $45,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

The audience development project will provide a unique opportunity for individuals from low-income, ethnically diverse neighborhoods in San José to experience opera for the first time. The grant will support Opera San José’s mission of serving a broad-based spectrum of the community by presenting the finest opera performances and providing programs that both enrich the opera experience and
encourage future generations of artists and audiences.

“What is absolutely necessary for the future vitality of this art form is to bring new patrons to the theatre,” says General Director, Irene Dalis. “This important grant has provided us the resources to engage 1,000 San José residents who have not seen live opera, educate them about the art, and help build a new audience for Opera San José.”

“This effort is a great way to introduce people to the beauty of opera, especially with a classic like La bohème,” said Dennis Scholl, vice president for arts, Knight Foundation. The grant is part of the Knight Foundation’s efforts to fund artistic and cultural projects that foster community engagement in the cities where the Knight brothers owned newspapers.

… but maybe you could!

There are usher openings at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House. See performance by the San Francisco Ballet, the San Francisco Opera, and other special events. Ushering requires the ability to go up and down stairs of the Opera House, and standing for long periods of time.

RTWT

I really wish I could do something like this when I’m done with performing, but it’s really my back that doesn’t allow me to stand for any length of time. So oh well! I need a “sitting usher” job somewhere. That would work!

(It’s interesting to me that these are volunteer positions. I hadn’t a clue all those folks went unpaid. But of course they get to see & hear a whole lotta opera!)

Read below for the dates, conductors, soloists and repertoire. You can read even more information here. (If you read this earlier today you probably saw some typos; I copied this directly from the symphony site. Corrections have now been made.)
