Current Auditions for American Orchestras

Below you will find current audition announcements. When I am able to obtain the repertoire it is listed. If not, you’ll have to contact that orchestra to receive it. I provide this information as a service, but I do not guarantee its accurcy! Be sure and check the links or contact the orchestras to verify the posted information. Thank you.



MILWAUKEE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Milwaukee Symphony holds auditions for Substitute and Extra musicians once a year. The audition is usually held in October or November, and includes all instruments.

DES MOINES METRO OPERA
SECTION OBOE/ENGLISH HORN

Thank you for your interest in an orchestral vacancy for the 2008 season of the Des Moines Metro Opera.
All audition materials must be postmarked by January 2, 2008. Late submissions will not be accepted. In some cases, runners-up may be offered contracts for one-year or alternate positions.

Please be sure your application packet is complete by including the following:

  • Three CD recordings (no mini-discs or cassette tapes) of the required excerpts performed in the order in which they appear in the application packet.
  • Three copies of educational / professional performance resumes.
  • Include a list of all operas performed and in what capacity (i.e. Principal, Assistant Principal, Section, Stage).
  • The names of two conductors who can provide a personal recommendation. Please include all pertinent contact information including position, organization, phone, and e-mail.
    Audition excerpts will be selected from the following operas:

    Verdi: Aida
    Strauss: Don Juan
    Brahms: Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn (Chorale St. Antoni)

    Verdi: Otello (Act 4)
    Debussy: Nocturnes (2. Festivals)
    Wagner: Tristan und Isolde (3. Aufzug)

    You must contact the DMMO office to receive a copy of the sheet music for the required excerpts.

    Recording Requirements:

  • This is a blind audition, so please do not write personal information on the CD.
  • Be sure that the recording is of the highest quality possible in order to present an accurate hearing.
  • Tracking between excerpts is encouraged but not required. Editing is allowed in-between but not within excerpts. Play straight through all individual excerpts. Count out any bars of rest less than four measures in length. Do not add any reverb.
  • Please use only the application packet excerpts and avoid other printed editions. Follow metronome markings when indicated and include all rests. No concerto or recital recordings will be accepted.
  • Failure to follow the above guidelines will result in automatic disqualification of the candidate.
    Recordings will not be returned unless a self-addressed, stamped envelope is included along with the audition materials.
    Audition winners and alternates will be notified no later than March 1, 2008.

    GRANT PARK ORCHESTRA
    PRINCIPAL OBOE

    ONLY HIGHLY QUALIFIED CANDIDATES SHOULD APPLY
    APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
    To receive a confirmed audition slot, please send a resume and a refundable deposit check for $50, payable to the Grant Park Orchestral Association to:

    Audition materials must be postmarked no later than Monday February 25, 2008. Your original, uncashed check will be returned to you at the audition. If you must cancel a confirmed time, your check will be destroyed if you notify the Festival office by Monday, March 3, 2008. Audition times will be assigned sequentially in the order the resumes, WITH checks, are received in the Festival office. Do not send Cash.
    The latest preliminary times will be assigned first, working back to the earliest time. Thus, it is possible that fewer than the specified number of days will be used, depending on the number of audition candidates. If all the available times have been assigned, a waiting list will be started. In addition, please be aware that it may not be possible to accommodate requests for specific audition times. Further instructions, as well as specific information regarding the location of the audition, directions, and lodging will be provided along with the confirmation of your audition time.
    The audition committee of the Grant Park Music Festival reserves the right to dismiss immediately any candidate not meeting professional standards at these auditions. Should an advertised position be offered to a current member of the Grant Park Orchestra, the resulting vacancy may be offered to the next most qualified candidate. Preliminary auditions are held behind a screen. All candidates will be required to demonstrate legal eligibility to accept work with the Grant Park Music Festival BEFORE taking the audition. The Festival reserves the right to refuse to audition candidates who are unable to demonstrate legal eligibility to work.
    The winning candidates(s) will be expected to start with the 2008 season, which runs from June 10th through August 16th.
    The Grant Park Music Festival does not provide any of the music listed. Original, bracketed parts will be available for review at the audition.

    Full season (2007-08) compensation guarantee (paid on a per service basis) for this position is $55,350. Full season runs from early
